In this presentation and discussion session, we will learn about the current state of affairs regarding the use of psychedelics – particularly psilocybin - as a tool to help ease the transition to end of life. We will discuss: how this medicine can be used therapeutically to alleviate depression and anxiety, the mechanism of action, the contraindications, the range of effects, and what the process looks like. Because psilocybin is still classified as a controlled substance under Federal and Washington State law, we will also address issues of access and where we are with legalization/decriminalization in Washington, Seattle, and Oregon.
Sarah Frey, MSW, LICSW, is a clinical social worker in private practice working with individuals (adults and adolescents) since 2015. She is a 2023 graduate of a 10-month intensive certificate program in Psychedelic Assisted Therapy through the Integrative Psychiatry Institute (IPI) in Boulder, CO. This program trains healers to work therapeutically with ketamine, MDMA and psilocybin, though where each of these medicines can be used legally varies widely and the landscape continues to evolve.
